Dealing With Your Toddler’s Thumb Sucking

Thumb sucking is a common, usually harmless habit as many babies and toddlers participate. For them, it is a soothing mechanism. For parents, however, it is a habit that must be broken. Here are some ways that let you know how to stop finger sucking habit of your toddler.

They recognize sucking their thumbs for comfort

Many children engage in thumb sucking because they may be tired, angry, afraid, or irritable. If that is the case, try to calm your child by other means. If they are tired, encourage them to take a nap. If you get bored, play with them or read a book. If they need to be soothed, pick them up, rubbing the back or cuddle with them. Try to encourage other ways to calm down.

Resist the urge to scold or pressure your child

Do not give negative attention to your child while they are sucking their thumb. Punishing them can hurt their feelings, and can affect their self-esteem. Tease may actually encourage them to continue to suck their thumb, especially if they hear something like, "Only babies suck their thumbs! ". Dealing with thumb sucking your toddler can be tackled more effectively.

Establish a removal system, especially if the child is older

Gradually, set limits on the amount of your child sucks his thumb. For example, tell your child that there are some parts that he or she has no right to suck their thumb.
