Strongbox Theater in East Rockaway, a long-awaited cultural hub, is finally opening its doors after a six-year renovation journey. This ambitious project, initiated by husband and wife team Tony Leone and Marla D'Urso, has transformed an abandoned bank into a vibrant performing arts space. With a soft launch of the bar/lounge on Thursday, followed by a ribbon-cutting ceremony and a one-act play festival, Strongbox is poised to become a cornerstone of the community.
The theater, designed to accommodate approximately 90 people, offers a diverse range of performances, including plays, comedy shows, concerts, and open mic nights. The bar, featuring a unique centerpiece—the preserved bank vault door—will serve cocktails, small plates, and desserts, providing a welcoming space for patrons before and after the shows. Leone's vision is clear: to create a gathering place that encourages face-to-face interaction, free from the distractions of technology.
The renovation process, however, was not without its challenges. Initially estimated to cost a modest seven figures, the project ultimately doubled the budget, and the couple had to endure a change of architects three years into the project. D'Urso recalled the difficult decision to continue, stating, 'We thought about giving up, but we decided to give it another shot. We invested so much of our energy and time, and we had to do it. We owned the building. We were running on fear and pressure.'
Despite the hurdles, Strongbox Theater now stands as a testament to the couple's perseverance and passion. Their goal is to nurture local talent, providing a launchpad for aspiring actors and musicians with aspirations of reaching Broadway. Leone expressed their ambition to revive Long Island's once-thriving original music scene, creating a haven for creative expression.
